Hot water cylinder installation and repair in the Cotswolds

Short answer

An unvented cylinder runs at mains pressure. Approved Document G says it is notifiable building work, and the installer needs the right skills. An installer on a competent person scheme can self-certify it. Otherwise you must tell building control before work starts. This page lists Cotswold firms that fit and repair cylinders.

Vented and unvented cylinders

A vented cylinder is fed from a cold water tank in the loft. The pressure depends on the height of the tank, so it is often low upstairs.

An unvented cylinder takes water straight from the mains. It gives mains pressure at every tap, and needs no loft tank. It suits homes with more than one bathroom, if the mains pressure and flow are good enough.

The rules for unvented cylinders

Approved Document G says the installation of an unvented system is notifiable building work. It must be notified to building control before work starts.

If the installer is on a competent person scheme for unvented hot water, they do not need to notify in advance. They self-certify the work, and you get a building regulations compliance certificate.

Approved Document G says owners should choose installers with the right skills. A competent person scheme, or a current skills card for unvented systems, shows this. This is often called the G3 qualification, from the part of the Building Regulations that covers hot water safety.

An unvented cylinder has safety valves and a discharge pipe. The rules say the stored water must not go above 100°C, and any discharge must be safe and visible.

Local factors in the Cotswolds

Hard water causes limescale on the heating coil and immersion heater. The cylinder then heats water more slowly. Ask the plumber about scale protection.

Old houses often have small supply pipes, and some still have lead. A mains-pressure cylinder needs good flow. The plumber should test the flow before you buy one.

If you plan a heat pump, tell the plumber. A heat pump needs a cylinder with a larger coil.

What to ask a firm

Ask each firm the same questions, so you can compare quotes fairly.

  • Are you on a competent person scheme for unvented hot water, or do you hold a current unvented skills card?
  • Will you test the mains pressure and flow first?
  • Who will send the Building Regulations notice, and what certificate will I get?
  • Does the price include the discharge pipe, valves and removal of the loft tanks?
  • Does the maker need a yearly service to keep the warranty?

Questions

Can any plumber fit an unvented cylinder?

Approved Document G says the installer should have the right skills, shown by a competent person scheme or a current unvented skills card. If the installer is not on a scheme, building control must be told before work starts.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. An installer on a competent person scheme self-certifies the work, and you get a building regulations compliance certificate, usually from the scheme operator.

Does a gas boiler change need a Gas Safe engineer?

Yes. Any work on the gas boiler or gas pipes needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. The cylinder itself is water work.
