Bathroom installation in the Cotswolds

Short answer

A new bathroom needs a plumber, and often an electrician and a tiler too. Most bathroom plumbing needs no permission. But a bath over 230 litres needs notice to your water company first. So does a pump that draws over 12 litres a minute from the supply pipe. This page lists Cotswold firms that fit bathrooms.

What a bathroom installation involves

A full refit means the plumber removes the old suite, changes the pipes where needed, and fits the new bath or shower, toilet and basin. Then the tiler and decorator finish the room.

Some firms manage the whole job, including the electrics and tiling. Others do only the plumbing. Ask who does each part, and who is in charge of the job.

The water company rules

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 apply to all bathroom plumbing. For some fittings, you must tell the water company before work starts, and wait for consent.

An approved contractor gives you a signed certificate that says if the work complies. Ask for it at the end of the job.

  • A bath that holds more than 230 litres: notice needed.
  • A pump or booster that draws more than 12 litres a minute from a supply pipe: notice needed.
  • A bidet with an upward spray or a flexible hose: notice needed, unless an approved contractor fits it.

Building Regulations

A like-for-like bathroom refit usually needs no building control approval. Work that changes drains, adds a new bathroom or changes the electrics can be different.

Some electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P. Use an electrician on a competent person scheme, so they can self-certify it. If you are not sure, ask your council’s building control team.

Local factors in the Cotswolds

Old stone houses often have uneven floors and thick walls. Pipe and waste runs can be harder, and the floor may need levelling before tiling.

Many older homes have low water pressure from a tank in the loft. Ask the plumber if a shower pump or a new cylinder is needed, before you choose a shower.

In a listed building, a change to the layout or the fabric can need listed building consent. Ask the council before work starts.

What to ask a firm

Ask each firm the same questions, so you can compare quotes fairly.

  • Does the price include removing the old suite and taking it away?
  • Who does the electrics and tiling, and are they in the price?
  • Will you tell the water company if the bath or pump needs notice?
  • Will I get a water regulations certificate at the end?
  • How long will the job take, and when will I have no toilet or water?

Questions

Do I need permission for a new bathroom?

Usually not. But a large bath or a strong pump needs notice to the water company, and some electrical and drainage work needs building control. A listed building can need consent.

Can I fit a power shower on a combi boiler?

Ask a plumber. A pump on the supply pipe that draws more than 12 litres a minute needs notice to the water company. The plumber can check what your system can take.

How long does a bathroom refit take?

It depends on the job. Ask each firm for a written plan with dates for each stage.
